Artists are refusing to take part in the US 250th anniversary celebrations due to links with Trump
This has been reported by CNN. According to Freedom 250 spokesperson Danielle Alvarez, Trump will open the event on 24 June during a ceremony marking the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States.
A number of artists have pulled out
In recent days, The Commodores, country singer Martina McBride, Morris Day and The Time, Poison frontman Bret Michaels, and rapper Young MC have all publicly announced their withdrawal from the concert programme. The concerts are due to take place on the National Mall in Washington from 25 June to 10 July. Martina McBride stated on social media that she had agreed to take part in the event because it had been presented to her as non-partisan.
“I was asked to perform at a non-partisan event, but this turned out to be misleading,” the singer wrote.
Other artists have made similar statements. Young MC said that the performers were allegedly not told about the event’s political affiliations. Bret Michaels stated that the project, which was presented to him as a celebration of the country, subsequently took on a much more controversial nature.
Trump reacted to the performers’ refusal
The US President mocked the artists who refused to take part in the celebrations. In a social media post, he claimed that the performers had started “complaining terribly”, and also suggested that instead of concerts, a large-scale rally of supporters of the Make America Great Again movement could be held. Trump subsequently called for the cancellation of the participation of artists who refused to perform at the event.
Not all musicians have pulled out
At the same time, some performers confirmed their participation in the concert programme. In particular, rapper Vanilla Ice, who had previously performed on numerous occasions at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence, stated that it was an honour for him to take part in the event. Rapper Flo Rida also did not publicly announce his refusal to perform. The inclusion of the band Milli Vanilli on the line-up attracted particular attention. Following this, Jodi Rocco, one of the vocalists whose voice was used on the band’s recordings, stated that she was surprised by the band’s inclusion in the programme. At the same time, it is expected that one of the band’s former frontmen, Fab Morvan, will still perform at the festival.
Organisers respond to criticism
Freedom 250 spokesperson Rachel Reisner stated that the organisation is continuing preparations for the celebrations and respects every artist’s right to make their own decisions regarding participation. According to her, the event’s doors remain open to performers who wish to join in celebrating 250 years of American freedom, culture and unity.
