Belgium, playing with ten men, were unable to beat Iran at the 2026 FIFA World Cup
The Belgian national team drew with Iran in their second Group G match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The match at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, USA, ended 0–0.
From the start of the match, the Belgians controlled the game, but it was the Iranians who created the first dangerous chance. In the 25th minute, Mehdi Taremi found the back of Thibaut Courtois’ net following a set-piece, but after a VAR review, the goal was disallowed for offside.
In the second half, Belgium came close to scoring. In the 59th minute, Maxime De Keper shot from inside the six-yard box, but Iran’s goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand saved his team with a spectacular save.
In the 66th minute, Belgium were reduced to ten men. Defender Nathan N’Goy lost possession in his own half, before fouling Taremi. The referee showed him a straight red card without hesitation.
Despite their numerical advantage, Iran failed to capitalise on their chances. The match ended in a goalless draw.
In the first round, Belgium drew 1–1 with Egypt, whilst Iran shared the points with New Zealand after a 2–2 draw.
