Rom played a historic match against Ecuador
In a World Cup group stage fixture, the Curaçao national team held their own against Ecuador, drawing 0–0.
Eloy Rom was the star of the show. The goalkeeper made 15 saves from shots on target and set a new World Cup record for the number of saves in a match that ended without extra time.
Previously, the best record was shared by two goalkeepers. Peru’s Ramón Quiroga at the 1978 World Cup and Mexico’s Guillermo Ochoa at the 2018 World Cup each made 13 saves in a single match.
Who remains the all-time record holder
The all-time World Cup record for the number of saves in a single match is still held by the legendary US national team goalkeeper Tim Howard.
In 2014, he made 16 saves in the round of 16 match against Belgium. However, that match lasted 120 minutes, as the winner was decided in extra time.
Eloy Roma’s solid performance helped the Curaçao national team secure their first point in the history of their World Cup campaigns. After the final whistle, FIFA named the 37-year-old goalkeeper the man of the match.
