Belgium secured a convincing victory over the USA and progressed to the quarter-finals of the 2026 World Cup
The Belgian national team secured a convincing victory over the USA in their round of 16 match at the 2026 World Cup. The match at Lumen Field in Seattle ended 4–1.
The Belgians opened the scoring as early as the 9th minute. Charles De Ketelaere found the net following a pass from Nicolas Raskin.
In the 31st minute, the Americans levelled the score. Malik Tillman converted a free-kick to bring the score level.
However, just two minutes later, Belgium took the lead again. Charles De Ketelaere completed his brace, finishing off a pass from Leandro Trossard at the far post.
Early in the second half, Rudi Garcia’s side extended their lead. In the 57th minute, Hans Vanaken slotted the ball into an empty net following a pass from de Ketelaere.
In the end, the Belgians secured a comfortable 4–1 victory and booked their place in the quarter-finals.
Following this defeat, the USA became the last of the host nations at the World Cup to be knocked out of the tournament. Canada and Mexico had also previously been eliminated from the competition.
In the quarter-finals, Belgium will face Spain, who narrowly beat Portugal 1–0 in the round of 16.
In the group stage, Belgium finished top of Group G, drawing with Egypt and Iran, and thrashing New Zealand. In the round of 32, Rudi García’s side beat Senegal 3–2 after extra time.
The US national team topped Group D, securing victories over Paraguay and Australia but suffering a defeat to Turkey. In the round of 16, the Americans beat Bosnia and Herzegovina 2–0.
The 2026 World Cup runs from 11 June to 19 July in the US, Mexico and Canada. This is the first time the tournament has featured 48 national teams.
