Switzerland beat Colombia on penalties to reach the quarter-finals of the 2026 World Cup
The Swiss national team beat Colombia in the round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup. The match at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver, Canada, ended 0–0 after normal and extra time, but the Swiss proved more clinical in the penalty shoot-out, winning 4–3.
Neither side managed to break the deadlock during normal time, so the winner was decided in extra time.
Colombia had the best chance in extra time. In the 99th minute, John Lukumi headed the ball against the crossbar following a corner taken by Luis Díaz.
The score remained unchanged by the end of extra time, so a place in the quarter-finals was decided in a penalty shoot-out. Switzerland proved the stronger side and won 4–3.
In the World Cup quarter-finals, Switzerland will face Argentina, who beat Egypt 3–2 in their round of 16 match.
In the group stage of the 2026 World Cup, Murat Yakin’s team finished top of Group B. The Swiss drew 1–1 with Qatar, thrashed Bosnia and Herzegovina 4–1 and beat Canada 2–1. In the round of 32, they beat Algeria 2–0.
The Colombian national team topped Group K, beating Uzbekistan 3–1, the Democratic Republic of the Congo 1–0 and drawing 0–0 with Portugal. In the round of 32, Colombia beat Ghana 1–0.
The 2026 World Cup runs from 11 June to 19 July in the USA, Mexico and Canada. This is the first time the tournament has featured 48 national teams.
