China is carrying out mass evacuations due to Typhoon Bavi
This is according to CCTV.
The largest-scale evacuation is taking place in the eastern provinces
The largest number of people were evacuated from the coastal city of Wenzhou in Zhejiang province, which may be in the typhoon’s path. More than 600,000 residents have temporarily left their homes there. A further 100,000 people have been evacuated in the neighbouring province of Fujian.
In Beijing, safety measures have been put in place in areas situated near mountainous terrain. Nearly 100,000 people have been relocated from these areas, and around two hundred tourist attractions and public spaces have been temporarily closed to visitors.
Forecasters warn of dangerous weather
China’s National Meteorological Centre has issued an orange alert. The warning covers 15 provinces as well as the capital. Forecasts suggest that some areas could see up to 500 millimetres of rainfall within 24 hours. Combined with strong winds, this poses a high risk of flooding, mudslides and landslides.
Before reaching China, the typhoon passed through Taiwan
The day before, ‘Bavi’ swept across the northern part of Taiwan. Due to the bad weather, over 1,200 flights and 116 ferry services were cancelled. Local authorities reported that around 14,000 people had been evacuated. Nearly 90 people were injured — most of them due to strong gusts of wind that knocked people off their bicycles and motorbikes.
