Church holiday on 27 May 2026: taboos and superstitions
27 May, the day of remembrance in the Orthodox calendar of Saint Therapont, the holy martyr and bishop
On 27 May, according to the new church calendar, Ukraine commemorates Saint Therapont, Bishop and Martyr.

In the Orthodox calendar, 27 May is the day of remembrance of Saint Therapont, the holy martyr and bishop.

Little is known about the early years of Saint Therapont. According to church sources, he lived during a period of intense persecution of Christians, when the Church was still establishing itself in various regions of the Roman Empire.

From his youth, Therapont was distinguished by his piety, love of prayer and devotion to the spiritual life. He was later ordained a priest and subsequently became a bishop.

In his ministry, Therapontus sought to strengthen the faith, taught Christians the fundamentals of the Gospel, supported the needy, and defended Church doctrine. His authority was based not only on his office but also on his personal devotion and spiritual steadfastness.

According to church tradition, during times of persecution, Therapont refused to renounce the Christian faith and worship pagan gods. He was arrested, interrogated and tortured, yet he remained faithful to Christ.

After this, the holy martyr was sentenced to death. In the Church tradition, he is honoured as a shepherd who did not waver in his faith even in the face of death.

Folk omens for 27 May

Several folk omens regarding the weather and the harvest are associated with this day.

If 27 May is warm and clear, summer may be early and hot.

According to folk observations, heavy morning dew portends a good harvest and stable, warm weather.

A northerly or gusty wind on this day was considered a sign of a possible cold snap at the end of May.

What not to do on 27 May

According to folk beliefs, it was not advisable to do any active cleaning in the house on 27 May.

It was particularly inadvisable to pick up a broom and sweep the house. It was believed that, along with the rubbish, one could ‘sweep out’ good luck, financial stability and peace from the home.

What you can do on this day

In folk tradition, it was advised on this day to show respect to the house spirit and leave a gift for it.
