Civil Service Day 2026: the date, the origins of the holiday and who is honoured
When is Ukraine’s Civil Service Day?
Ukraine’s Civil Service Day is traditionally celebrated on 23 June.
This date was not chosen at random: in December 2002, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution proclaiming 23 June as World Public Service Day.
In this way, the UN sought to emphasise the importance of civil servants’ work in strengthening democracy and social justice throughout the world.
In Ukraine, the professional holiday known as Ukrainian Civil Service Day has been observed since 2003. The then President, Leonid Kuchma, justified the need to honour the work of civil servants, stating in his decree of 4 April that these professionals play an extremely important role in the development of Ukraine as a sovereign, independent, democratic state governed by the rule of law.
And although the day is not a public holiday in Ukraine, it is an excellent opportunity to realise once again that behind every social project or state reform there are tens of thousands of professionals on whom the country’s well-being and the legality of all procedures relating to its functioning directly depend.
How Ukraine’s Civil Servant Day is celebrated
On Ukraine’s Civil Servant Day, all public officials are honoured, regardless of their rank: from civil servants in central government bodies to specialists at the local level.
To mark the occasion, the National Agency of Ukraine for the Civil Service organises the ‘Best Civil Servant’ competition, in which the most successful professionals are selected each year – those who contribute to reforms and work to uphold the image of a decent, honest civil servant, whose work fosters citizens’ trust in state institutions.
It is precisely their stories and achievements that demonstrate just how important the civil service is, and that it operates in the interests of citizens. And the state shows that it values the dedication and competence of its employees.
