Why is Palm Sunday celebrated on different dates in 2026?
OBOZ.UA reports on the differences between church calendars and the main folk customs associated with this day.
The Lord’s Entry into Jerusalem is traditionally celebrated seven days before Christ’s Resurrection. In 2026, Roman Catholics and Protestants are celebrating today, 29 March, whilst Orthodox and Greek Catholics will bless the willow branches on 5 April. This feast is dedicated to the biblical event when Jesus was welcomed into Jerusalem with palm branches as the true Saviour.
In Ukraine, the southern palm has been replaced by the willow — a symbol of life that awakens first. The ‘catkins’ blessed in church are considered a powerful talisman for the home. The most famous folk tradition is the playful ‘beating’ with twigs. As they leave the church, worshippers gently tap one another, saying: ‘It’s not me hitting you — it’s the willow; in a week’s time — it’s Easter!’. They say this ritual brings good health for the whole year.
As the festival falls during Lent, certain concessions apply for believers: they are permitted to eat fish and drink a little wine. The blessed willow is not thrown away, but carefully kept behind the icons until the following year. It protects the home from misfortune and serves as a reminder of the approaching bright feast of Easter.
