Ukrainian Women's Day instead of 8 March: draft resolution registered in Parliament
The information was published in the text of draft resolution No. 15052 registered in the Verkhovna Rada.
The draft resolution provides for the introduction of a new public holiday and recommends that the Cabinet of Ministers develop and approve a comprehensive plan of measures for its celebration at the state level within three months.
The explanatory note states that the initiative is aimed at recognising traditions and rooting historical memory in Ukrainian cultural space.
The document emphasises that the Ukrainian nation is undergoing a period of revival after the Revolution of Dignity and in the context of a full-scale war with the Russian Federation. The authors believe that the formation of new national traditions should be enshrined in the state calendar.
The explanatory note also states that 8 March — International Women's Day — was established on the initiative of Clara Zetkin in 1921 in connection with the February Revolution of 1917 in Russia.
Instead, the authors of the initiative propose to celebrate Ukrainian Women's Day on 25 February — the birthday of Lesya Ukrainka. The document emphasises that this date has long been celebrated by Ukrainian communities in Ukraine and abroad.
The aim of the project is to establish a new holiday, shape national cultural identity and revise the state calendar.
