Green Holidays 2026: When is Trinity Sunday in Ukraine?
In the Christian tradition, the Green Festivals hold special significance.
Pentecost will be celebrated in Ukraine on 31 May 2026. The date of the holiday changes every year, as it depends on the date of Easter.

In 2026, Pentecost falls on 31 May.

This holiday is also known as Trinity Sunday or the Day of the Descent of the Holy Spirit. It is celebrated on the 50th day after Easter.

As Easter falls on 12 April in 2026, Trinity Sunday will be celebrated on the last day of spring – 31 May.

Why is Trinity Sunday called the birthday of the Church?

In Christian tradition, the Pentecostal feasts hold special significance. It is the Descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles that is considered the beginning of the spread of Christ’s teachings throughout the world.

According to church tradition, on the 50th day after Christ’s Resurrection, the apostles gathered in Jerusalem. Then the Holy Spirit descended upon them in the form of tongues of fire.

After this, the apostles received the ability to speak in different languages and began to preach the Word of God to various peoples. This is why Trinity Sunday is often called the birthday of the Church.

Traditions of the Green Holidays in Ukraine

In Ukraine, the Green Holidays have long been associated with greenery, herbs, flowers and the renewal of life.

On this day, believers go to church, carrying bouquets of herbs and greenery to be blessed. After the service, they take them home and decorate their homes.

In folk tradition, such greenery was considered a talisman against evil. It was often placed near icons or kept in the home after the feast.

Homes were decorated for the Green Holidays with mint, lovage, tree branches and wild grasses. Churches are also traditionally adorned with greenery.

How Trinity Sunday is celebrated

After the service, the celebrations continue within the family circle.

Festive dishes are laid on the table, and the home is decorated with flowers and herbs. Relatives greet one another on the Green Holidays and wish each other peace, prosperity, health and harmony.

For Ukrainians, this is one of the warmest spring and summer holidays, combining religious significance with ancient folk traditions.
