Dozens of balloons with contraband flew from Belarus to Poland
On the evening of 24 December, Polish services received a report from the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces about several dozen objects that had flown in from the territory of Belarus. Police and border guards began searching for and seizing the objects. This was reported by The Public with reference to Dorzeczy.
According to Polish media, it is about 59 weather balloons. Some of them were carrying contraband cigarettes, while others were equipped with GPS locators. The services found 13 balloons with a load of tobacco products, as well as five separate packages. Each package contained about 1,500 packs of cigarettes. Most of the finds were recorded in the Podlaskie Voivodeship, with four more cases in the Lubelskie Voivodeship
The bullets, according to journalists, could rise to a height of up to 9 thousand metres. In the Lublin region, one of the cargo cylinders broke the power grid, which temporarily left some consumers without electricity
Polish security forces emphasise that they are dealing with smuggling, but do not rule out testing the response of Polish air target detection systems. The public was urged not to approach the found bullets and to report them via the number 112.
Separately, Poland also reported tightening security measures amid Russian aviation activity in the region, but no violations of Polish airspace were recorded
