Diplomatic discussions between Kyiv and Tel Aviv regarding grain supplies are intensifying. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar has responded to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s public criticism regarding the potential purchase of agricultural products that Russia may have exported from the occupied territories of Ukraine.
The Israeli Foreign Ministry has called for an end to “Twitter diplomacy” and for the discussion to be moved to a professional level. According to Saar, if the Ukrainian side has concrete evidence of wrongdoing, it should be submitted through official channels for legal review.
The crux of the conflict: Haifa and stolen exports
Tensions arose as early as late April, when Ukraine announced that ships carrying cargo from Mariupol and Berdyansk had entered Israeli ports. At the time, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry summoned the Israeli ambassador, and Minister Andriy Sybiga reported that over 850,000 tonnes of grain had been illegally exported in recent months. Kyiv insists on blocking such vessels, whilst the Israeli side stresses the need for a detailed examination of the origin of each consignment.
The parties are currently continuing to clarify their positions through diplomatic correspondence, attempting to find a way out of a situation that threatens relations between the two states.
