Kirill Budanov marked World Press Freedom Day
On Sunday, 3 May, Kirill Budanov, head of the Main Intelligence Directorate, issued a statement in which he emphasised the fundamental difference between journalism and enemy propaganda. According to him, the Russian propaganda network is not a media outlet, but a “full-fledged war machine”, in which journalists act as accomplices to crimes against Ukraine.
Freedom of speech as a component of security
Budanov noted that for Ukraine, freedom of speech is not only a democratic value but also a matter of the state’s survival. “For us, freedom of speech is an element of national security. It is also about responsibility, truth and trust. A strong state is impossible without strong media,” remarked the head of intelligence. He also added that the public’s right to know the truth is ensured precisely by those professionals who choose professional ethics and honesty over quick profit or hype. The head of the Main Intelligence Directorate expressed his gratitude to every journalist and media outlet that continues to work in wartime conditions, upholding the profession’s high standards. Budanov emphasised that the responsible work of journalists is a vital component of our shared victory.
