Kyivstar, Ukraine’s leading mobile operator, is launching trials of data transmission in Light Data mode via the Starlink satellite network.

This has been reported by the company’s press office.

Direct to Cell (D2C) technology allows smartphones to connect to satellites to use messaging apps, including WhatsApp. The National Commission (NCC) has granted permission for these trials to ensure connectivity in areas without terrestrial coverage.

In the initial phase, the company’s engineers are involved in the tests, and the service is planned to be launched for 4G subscribers during 2026. The operator is collaborating with software developers and smartphone manufacturers to adapt applications to the requirements of the satellite signal.

“We are now moving on to the next stage – introducing access to messaging apps, such as WhatsApp, via satellite. This will allow users to stay in touch at the most critical moments.

We appreciate the regulator’s support in conducting tests and its readiness to implement the latest technological solutions,” emphasised Ilya Polshakov, Director of New Business Development at Kyivstar.
