Trinity Sunday, or the Feast of the Holy Trinity, is one of the twelve movable feasts, so its date changes every year. In 2026, Orthodox Ukrainians will celebrate Trinity Sunday on 31 May – the 50th day after Easter.

The date of Trinity Sunday depends directly on Easter. In the church calendar, this feast is also known as Pentecost, as it falls on the 50th day after the Resurrection of Christ.

That is precisely why Trinity Sunday does not have a fixed date. It is calculated separately each year, depending on when Easter was celebrated.

In 2026, Orthodox Ukrainians celebrated Easter on 12 April. If you add 49 days to this date, the 50th day will be Sunday, 31 May. This is the date on which Holy Trinity Day falls this year.

There is also a simpler way to determine the holiday without a church calendar – count the eighth Sunday after Easter. In this case, the date will also fall on 31 May.

In the church tradition, the Trinity is associated with the manifestation of God in three persons – the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. According to tradition, it was on the 50th day after the resurrection of Jesus Christ that the Holy Spirit appeared to his disciples.

The name ‘Green Sunday’ has folk origins. It is linked to ancient customs of seeing off spring and welcoming summer, as well as honouring nature and the memory of deceased relatives.

In ancient times, Ukrainians decorated their homes with fresh leaves and greenery, believing that this would allow the souls of their loved ones to visit their homes. This ritual symbolised the beginning of a new cycle of life.

Over time, folk customs merged with the church festival, and Trinity Sunday became part of the cycle of Green Holidays. Today, the blessed greenery in churches and homes symbolises not only the arrival of summer, but also the life that the Holy Spirit bestows upon all creation.

As reported by ThePublic, on 15 April, according to the new church calendar, believers honour the Vyshhorod-Volodymyr Icon of the Mother of God. This date also marks Bright Wednesday of Holy Week, with which various church traditions, folk customs, omens and prohibitions are associated.
