Maia Sandu in Kyiv today: a solidarity visit to mark the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster
This was reported on the official Facebook page of Moldovan President Maia Sandu
Diplomatic visit to Kyiv
Maia Sandu’s morning in the Ukrainian capital began with discussions on regional security and European unity. The President emphasised that her presence in Kyiv today is a symbol of unwavering support for Ukraine.
“We need the same unity and determination today — to protect peace in Europe. The Republic of Moldova’s place is alongside those who choose to build, not to destroy,” said Maia Sandu.
Joint trip to Chernobyl
Following the conclusion of talks in Kyiv, the leaders will travel to the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. This trip is dedicated to honouring the memory of the liquidators, whose self-sacrifice 40 years ago saved Europe from an even greater environmental disaster.
Sandu noted that the tragedy of 1986 proved that disasters know no borders, and therefore international solidarity—exemplified by the protective containment structure over the reactor—is the only way to overcome global challenges.
