Moldova asks Romania for help with electricity after Russia's attack on Ukraine
Moldova may be left without electricity due to a new attack by Russia on Ukraine's energy infrastructure. This was reported by the publication The Public citing the state company Moldelectrica and local media, urging citizens to limit electricity consumption and prepare for possible outages.
According to energy officials, after shelling in neighboring Ukraine, the volume of imports used by Moldova to cover its own generation deficit sharply decreased. The country traditionally depends on Ukraine's power system, especially during peak hours, so strikes on Ukrainian substations and transmission lines immediately affected supply stability.
In this regard, Chișinău has appealed to Romania to increase commercial electricity supplies. The government stated that negotiations are ongoing not only with Bucharest but also with other regional partners to quickly cover the deficit and avoid outages.
Moldovan energy companies have already implemented restrictions: enterprises are asked to reduce consumption, and residents are advised to decrease the use of electrical appliances in the evening hours. Scheduled outages may be implemented if necessary.
Moldova has faced similar problems before: since the start of the full-scale war in Ukraine, the country's system has repeatedly experienced disruptions due to Russian attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure. However, the current situation is considered one of the most critical, as winter is still ahead and consumption traditionally increases.
Authorities assure that they are working on stabilization but urge citizens to prepare for possible temporary outages and to conserve resources.
