The parties’ positions and eyewitness accounts
One of the participants in the events of 2014, named Roman, noted that the intervention of civilians at the time was a result of the inaction of law enforcement agencies. He said that he joined the events in the city centre after attacks on football fans began. According to him, the dispersal of the camp on Kulikovo Pole was a step towards stabilising the security situation in Odesa.
Civil society activist Mykola Tarasenko emphasised that the memory of this day is important for understanding the price paid to preserve peace in the region. Representatives of nationalist organisations, in particular the Odesa branch of ‘Right Youth’, emphasised that the events of 2 May were a pivotal moment that prevented scenarios similar to those in Donbas or Crimea from unfolding in the city.
As part of the events at the site where Igor Ivanov, one of the first victims of the clashes in 2014, was killed, commemorative banners were reinstalled.
