PAC-3 missiles for the Patriot system from Germany: how these missiles will bolster Ukraine’s air defence
This was reported by the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence. Following a meeting in
the ‘Ramstein’ format, Ukraine has received a new batch of PAC-3 missiles from Germany for its Patriot air defence system. The Ministry of Defence emphasises that these interceptors are one of the key elements in the defence of Ukrainian airspace.
The ministry explains that PAC-3 missiles are considered the most effective Patriot missiles for engaging ballistic targets. In particular, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence explicitly states that they are capable of intercepting ballistic “Iskander” missiles, as well as hypersonic “Kinzhal” and “Zircon” missiles.
One of the main advantages of the PAC-3 is said to be the “hit-to-kill” principle – that is, direct kinetic impact without detonating a large fragmentation warhead. The Ministry of Defence emphasises that this allows not merely to damage, but to completely destroy the missile’s warhead and reduce risks to critical infrastructure. Similarly, US defence documents describe the PAC-3 MSE as a hit-to-kill interceptor designed to destroy tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and air targets.
According to the Ministry of Defence, the PAC-3 missile is approximately 5 m long and 25 cm in diameter. The ministry also states that it reaches speeds of up to 6,170 km/h, weighs 218 kg and is equipped with an active radar homing seeker. It is precisely this, as the ministry explains, that enables the missile to perform sharp manoeuvres, alter its trajectory and intercept fast-moving targets, regardless of a ground-based illumination station.
Another advantage of the PAC-3 is its ammunition density. The Ministry of Defence notes that a single Patriot launcher can carry 16 PAC-3 missiles. By comparison, if the system is loaded with PAC-2 missiles, it is capable of engaging a maximum of four targets, as each container holds only one missile.
The report also specifies the interception range and altitude. In particular, for the PAC-3 CRI, the Ministry of Defence cites a range of up to 45 km and an altitude of up to 12 km. For the PAC-3 MSE version, it is stated that its performance figures are even higher. US budget documents also confirm that the PAC-3 MSE is an improved version of the basic missile and extends the Patriot’s interception range and altitude.
The Ministry of Defence emphasises that the new batch of PAC-3s will strengthen the capabilities of Ukraine’s air defence system, particularly in combating the most dangerous aerial targets. Against the backdrop of regular ballistic missile attacks, this makes such missiles one of the most scarce and strategically important resources for Ukraine.
The article also notes that the defence of Ukrainian airspace is the first point of Ukraine’s War Plan, which was unveiled by Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov. The stated objective is to identify 100% of air threats in real time and intercept at least 95% of missiles and drones.
