Rubio warns Cuba of consequences after Maduro's capture
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that Cuba is in serious danger amid the events in Venezuela after the seizure of Nicolas Maduro. He said this on 4 January on NBC News' Meet the Press programme, stressing that he would be concerned if he were working in the government of Havana.
According to Rubio, it was the Cuban security forces that provided Maduro's protection and controlled domestic intelligence in Venezuela. He stressed that Washington negatively assesses Cuba's role in supporting the previous Venezuelan leadership
U.S. President Donald Trump said earlier that the situation in Cuba is similar to Venezuela and called the island nation in a deep crisis. At the same time, he emphasised that the US goal is to help the population, not to wage war against the countries of the region
Rubio also said that the United States is not waging a war against Venezuela, but is focused on fighting drug trafficking and the influence of external players. According to him, the United States will not allow Venezuelan oil resources to be controlled by China, Russia, Iran or Cuban intelligence services. He also noted that since 2014, about 8 million people have left Venezuela, which has become one of the largest migration waves of our time
