Arrest of Fitburg vessel cancelled: suspicions remain
The Fitburg, flying the flag of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, has already left the port of Kantwick in Kirkkonummi. According to the Finnish Border Guard, the ship was unloaded at around 11am on Monday. The operation is controlled by the Helsinki police, as the vessel is subject to surveillance at the exit from the country's territorial waters, reports Yle.
Last week, as part of the investigation, Fitburg was detained on suspicion of damaging an important telecommunications cable between Helsinki and Tallinn. Public interest in the case has increased as the Baltic Sea region has long been on high alert following accidents on key infrastructure lines since the outbreak of hostilities in Ukraine.
Ban on departure for other crew members
Six crew members remain eligible to leave the territory of Cantwick, including one suspect who is a citizen of Azerbaijan. The team also includes representatives of Russia, Georgia and Kazakhstan. The court hearings were held behind closed doors, and the court raised the grounds for the suspect's arrest as substantial evidence was presented in the case.
Finnish law enforcement agencies were among the first to conduct a detailed investigation of infrastructure damage in Ukraine, and this incident has attracted particular attention due to security risks in the region.
