The US dropped bombs weighing over 2,200 kg near the Strait of Hormuz
This was reported by US Central Command (CENTCOM).
US forces used 5,000-pound munitions against fortified Iranian missile positions. These were located along the Iranian coast near the Strait of Hormuz.
“Iranian anti-ship cruise missiles at these sites posed a threat to international shipping in the strait,” the command stated.
An American official stated that the Iranian positions were attacked with GBU-72 Advanced 5K Penetrator bombs, which were first used in 2021. This is a high-precision aerial bomb designed to destroy fortified underground targets. A distinctive feature of this weapon is its GPS guidance, which allows targets to be struck even in adverse weather conditions — such as rain or snow.
Meanwhile, as reported by CNN, the US embassy in Baghdad came under fire. US security personnel reported that they managed to shoot down two rockets heading towards the building. The embassy was also attacked by drones, causing ‘some damage’.
