The American company Tesla has once again topped the ranking of the world’s largest suppliers of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) for the period January to March.

This is according to Counterpoint.

At the start of 2026, the brand accounted for 13% of the global market, whilst its main competitors – the Chinese firms BYD and Geely – held 11% and 10% respectively.

The change in leadership came against the backdrop of a sharp drop in BYD’s sales, which fell by a quarter in the first quarter, whilst Geely lost only 4%.

Overall, the global market for fully electric cars showed moderate growth of 5% during this period, accounting for 14% of all passenger vehicle purchases. At the same time, demand for hybrid models, conversely, fell by 5%.

China remains the main consumer of eco-friendly transport, accounting for around 45% of global sales, despite a 15% slump in the domestic Chinese market in the first quarter.

Europe and the US follow the leader in the list of the largest sales regions. As for consumer preferences, the top three most popular electric cars in the world were the Tesla Model Y, the Galaxy Xingyuan and the Tesla Model 3.

As a reminder, it was previously reported that Ferrari is producing its first electric car, priced at $550,000.
