The United Kingdom will join the European Union’s loan programme to support Ukraine in 2026 and 2027. The parties finalised the relevant agreement following the conclusion of the negotiations.

The European Union and the United Kingdom have concluded negotiations on London’s participation in the EU’s €90 billion loan programme in support of Ukraine. This is stated in a joint statement by the parties.

The document states that the UK will contribute to the loan programme for 2026 and 2027. The amount of the contribution will correspond to the value of contracts concluded with British defence manufacturers.

The parties welcomed the signing of the agreement, which formally marked the conclusion of negotiations on the UK’s participation in the credit support mechanism for Ukraine.

The statement emphasises that this decision will enable Ukraine to procure defence equipment from a wider range of manufacturers under the credit programme.

“The UK will make a fair and proportionate contribution to the borrowing costs corresponding to the value of contracts concluded with British companies,” the joint statement said.

The European Union and the UK described the agreement reached as confirmation of their joint support for Ukraine and the interdependence of both sides’ defence industrial bases.

The document also emphasises that the European Union and the United Kingdom will continue to cooperate with international partners to strengthen Ukraine’s resilience, support its economy and meet its immediate and long-term needs.

“European security is at its strongest when allies stand united. The loan to support Ukraine is also a vital investment in European security. A strong, sovereign and secure Ukraine is vital for the security and stability of Europe as a whole, as well as for deterring future aggression,” the statement reads.

The joint document also emphasises that the European Union and the United Kingdom remain committed to supporting Ukraine for as long as necessary to bring an end to Russia’s unlawful armed aggression and to achieve a comprehensive, just and lasting peace.
