The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Station has once again lost its external power supply
This was reported by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
What happened at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant
According to the agency, after the loss of external power supply, the plant’s emergency diesel generators automatically kicked in. They provide a backup power supply to cool the reactors and maintain other vital nuclear safety systems.
The IAEA noted that the cause of the latest power cut was a problem with the internal power lines on the plant’s premises.
As a result, the ZNPP lost connection to its only available external power line — the 330 kV Ferosplavna-1 line.
The IAEA has stated that safety at the Zaporizhzhia NPP needs to be strengthened
Meanwhile, work is continuing to restore the main 750 kV Dniprovska power line, which has been out of service for around three months. Repairs are being carried out under a local ceasefire agreed through IAEA mediation. Representatives of the agency on both sides of the Dnipro River are monitoring the work.
IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi stated that yet another loss of external power supply highlights the critical need to restore a stable connection between the plant and the electricity grid. According to him, this is one of the key steps in preventing a potential nuclear accident.
