In Brazil, the police have solved an unusual case involving the alleged abduction of a 12-year-old girl. After several hours of searching, the police established that the child had made up the story herself in order to get money from her family

This is according to Oddity Central.

What happened

The incident took place in the town of Itáopolis in the north of the state of Santa Catarina. At around 1 am, the parents reported their 12-year-old daughter missing to the police.

Shortly afterwards, they began receiving messages from her phone. In them, the girl wrote that she had allegedly been abducted, was being threatened and was being mistreated. The frightened family contacted the police. Officers from the criminal investigations department in the neighbouring town of Mafra were called in to assist with the search.

The girl demanded a ransom

A few hours after her disappearance, the schoolgirl got back in touch with her parents. This time, she claimed that her ‘kidnappers’ were demanding money, otherwise they might kill her.

However, it never came to handing over the ransom. The police found the girl in a house in a rural area near Itayopolis. The police were preparing for a rescue operation, but found no attackers at the scene.

Whilst speaking to the police, the 12-year-old girl admitted that she had made up the story about the kidnapping to get money from her parents. She was then taken to the police station. The schoolgirl’s actions were classified as an offence similar to extortion. However, it is not yet known whether she will face legal consequences due to her age.
