Hungary has lifted the ban on Ukrainian media
This was announced by Zoltán Tarr, Hungary’s Minister for Social Affairs and Culture, on his Facebook page.
Why Hungary has lifted the ban on Ukrainian media
According to Tarr, the decision was taken jointly with the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He recalled that the restrictions on Ukrainian media were introduced in 2025. At the time, this was explained as a response to Ukraine’s actions, which had restricted the operations of some Hungarian media outlets due to the dissemination of Russian propaganda and breaches of journalistic standards. A representative of the new government stated that such situations cannot be compared. According to him, independent Ukrainian media cannot be equated with outlets that spread disinformation. Tarr also criticised the approach of the previous government, stating that such decisions only exacerbated political tensions between the countries.
What this means for Ukrainians in Hungary
The issue of lifting the ban was discussed with Liliana Greksa, a representative of the Ukrainian national minority in Hungary. She noted that access to information in the Ukrainian language is important both for the Ukrainian community in Hungary and for people who have moved to the country due to the war. The new government has emphasised that it is committed to improving relations with Ukraine and developing cooperation between the two countries.
