Trump says that without his approval, Zelenskyy's peace plan will not be implemented
U.S. President Donald Trump said on the eve of his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that he is the key figure in the issue of a possible peaceful settlement of the war between Ukraine and Russia. Trump said this in an interview with Politico, according to The Public.
Zelensky is scheduled to arrive in Florida on Sunday with a new 20-point plan to end the war. The document envisages, among other things, the creation of a demilitarised zone and security guarantees from the US. At the same time, Trump has publicly made it clear that he is in no hurry to support Ukraine's proposals.
«He has nothing until I approve it,
According to the publication, Washington insists that Ukraine should back down from some of its initial demands, while Russia has hardly moved away from its maximalist positions. The Kremlin has not yet publicly responded to Kyiv's new proposals. At the same time, Trump expressed his belief that he could hold productive talks with both Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin, with whom he plans to speak in the near future.
The two sides are also expected to discuss the management of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant and the control of Donbas at the meeting in Florida. One of the key elements of the Ukrainian plan is the creation of a demilitarised zone, provided that Russian troops withdraw from part of the Donetsk region, which Moscow has not yet demonstrated readiness to do.
Trump also noted that the Russian economy is in a difficult state, which, in his opinion, may affect the Kremlin's position in the negotiations.
