Ukraine and Germany are discussing the return of Ukrainian men of conscription age
Oleksiy Makeev, Ukraine’s Ambassador to Germany, spoke about this in an interview with Ukrinform.
What mechanisms for the return of Ukrainians are Ukraine and Germany discussing?
According to the diplomat, one area of cooperation involves the Unity Hub centres, set up to support Ukrainians abroad. The first such centre is already operational in Berlin, where citizens can access government services and advice.
Makeyev noted that, in parallel, a special working group comprising representatives from Ukrainian and German authorities is exchanging information and exploring possible solutions.
“I will not disclose these mechanisms just yet. They are currently being discussed as part of this working group’s activities,” said the ambassador.
He emphasised that Ukraine is keen to maintain contact with its citizens in Germany and is keen for them to contribute to the country’s reconstruction once the war is over.
How many Ukrainians are currently in Germany
According to Makeyev, there are currently around 1.3 million Ukrainians living in Germany. An increasing number of them are finding employment and paying taxes and social security contributions, although the level of integration is still lower than in Poland. According to official figures, as of the end of May 2026, there were 1.348 million Ukrainian refugees in Germany, including 356,000 men aged between 18 and 63.
