A plane carrying parachutists has crashed in France: 11 dead
This has been reported by BFMTV, citing local authorities in the Meurthe-et-Moselle department.
The plane crashed shortly after take-off
The plane crash occurred at around 11:00 near the commune of Tomblen, not far from the city of Nancy in the Meurthe-et-Moselle department. According to the prefecture, the civilian aircraft took off from Nancy-Esses airfield but crashed shortly after take-off for as yet unknown reasons. There were 11 people on board — the pilot and two groups of five parachutists. All of them were killed.
Emergency services are at the scene
Following the crash, the prefecture activated the departmental operations centre to coordinate the work of all services in real time. Rescue workers, police and investigators are at the scene. Law enforcement officers are establishing the circumstances of the air crash. The National Police have urged members of the public not to approach the crash site so as not to hinder the work of the emergency services.
Medical staff may have been among the dead
Thierry Pêche, President of the Council of the Order of Private Nurses for the Meurthe-et-Moselle department, told BFMTV that the victims likely included private nurses and nursing assistants. According to him, an introductory skydiving session had been organised that day, and healthcare workers likely accounted for half of the victims, with the other half being instructors. French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez is expected to arrive at the scene of the tragedy in the coming hours.
