Around 20,000 people are protesting near the AfD conference
According to police, around 20,000 demonstrators have taken to the streets in Erfurt. Participants in several marches are heading towards the exhibition centre where the party conference is being held.
Law enforcement officers also reported several attempts to block access routes to the venue. In particular, protesters blocked one of the streets near the exhibition centre. During isolated incidents, pyrotechnic devices and bags of paint were thrown at police officers. Reinforced police patrols are on duty to maintain order in the city.
Delegates arrived before dawn
The congress organisers had prepared in advance for possible protests. Most of the approximately 600 delegates arrived at the venue during the night. According to a party spokesperson, by 5.00 am there were already 540 delegates on the exhibition centre grounds, which meant the congress could begin on time at 10.00 am.
There are currently no reports of serious clashes or arrests. The police are continuing to monitor the situation in the area where the party conference is being held.
