Ukraine has nominated the vyshyvanka for inclusion on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List

Україна подала вишиванку до Репрезентативного списку нематеріальної культурної спадщини людства ЮНЕСКО.
Тетяна Бережна назвала це історичним кроком для збереження та міжнародного визнання української культури.
За її словами, вишиті сорочки є одним із найсильніших символів української ідентичності.

What the vyshyvanka means to Ukraine
The minister emphasised that the vyshyvanka remains an integral part of modern culture.
“It is very important to us that the world knows: the vyshyvanka is Ukrainian. And that, through it, the world comes to know Ukraine and the strength of our culture even more deeply,” she said.
Vyshyvanka Day
On 15 May, the world celebrated Vyshyvanka Day.
This holiday is intended to preserve the folk traditions of creating and wearing ethnic embroidered Ukrainian clothing.
Vyshyvanka Day is not mandatory, but millions of people around the world take part in it.
Participants in the celebration demonstrate their national identity and cultural unity.

She was born on 9 January 1989 in Rohatyn. She graduated from the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Law and a Master’s degree in Law. She undertook an internship at the Parliament of Canada as a fellow of the Canada-Ukraine Parliamentary Programme.
She studied at the Ukrainian School of Political Studies, the Aspen Institute Kyiv on the ‘Values and Society’ programme, the Kyiv School of Economics on the ‘Government Relations (GR)’ programme, and the London School of Economics and Political Science on the ‘Education for Ukraine’s Victory’ course. She completed the Strategic Architect School programme at the Kyiv-Mohyla Business School, specialising in ‘Management and Administration’.
She has worked at the law firm “Vasyl Kisil & Partners” since 2011 and was admitted to the bar in 2017. Between 2017 and 2021, Berezhna was listed among Ukraine’s recommended lawyers in the field of taxation, according to the Chambers Europe legal directory.
On 17 June 2022, she became Deputy Minister of Economy of Ukraine. She worked in Yulia Svyrydenko’s team. She was responsible for the development and implementation of labour and employment policy. Her responsibilities in the role included reforming the labour sector, creating jobs, combating unemployment, integrating veterans into the labour market and entrepreneurship, changing Ukrainians’ attitudes towards employment, bridging the gender pay gap, and facilitating the return of forced migrants from abroad.
Together with the Ministry of Economy team, business representatives and the creative agency Bickerstaff.777, Tetiana Berezhna created the Ukrainian Pavilion for the Expo 2025 World Exhibition in Osaka (Japan). She served as Ukraine’s Commissioner-General and was responsible for Ukraine’s representation at the exhibition.
On 28 July 2025, Tetiana Berezhna was appointed Acting Minister of Culture and Strategic Communications of Ukraine. Over the course of 2.5 months, she carried out staff rotations, worked on the protection of cultural heritage and launched a grant programme for the creative industries.
In September 2025, Berezhna signed a memorandum with the international alliance ALIPH to establish the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Fund. The fund will manage international financial aid for heritage restoration.
On 21 October 2025, she took the helm of the Ministry of Culture as Minister of Culture and Deputy Prime Minister for Humanitarian Policy. She identified her priorities in the role as attracting resources to culture, heritage preservation and the autonomy of cultural institutions.
