Ukrainians took to the streets in Washington to protest against the ‘Immortal Regiment’

On 3 May, representatives of the Russian diaspora organised an ‘Immortal Regiment’ march in the centre of the US capital. The event took place near the World War II Memorial in Washington. In response, Ukrainian and American activists held a protest to draw attention to Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine. Law and order during both events was maintained by US federal agencies, including the police, the National Guard and representatives of the Department of Justice. In Washington, the ‘Immortal Regiment’ march had not been held since the Russian Federation’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine until May 2025, when the event was announced again.
The protesters’ stance
Ukrainian and American activists gathered near the memorial with national flags, speaking out against the use of Soviet symbols and the spread of Kremlin narratives in the US.
Counter-protester Carter Smith highlighted the inappropriateness of the event:
“They are spreading propaganda. I see the Russian flag, as if the Soviet flag weren’t offensive enough. They don’t even hide the fact that they support brutal annexation and war. To see this in Washington is an absolute disgrace.”
It is worth noting that, according to British intelligence, no similar marches were held directly in Russia in 2023–2024. One of the reasons cited was the risk of “expressions of discontent” with the war during mass gatherings. However, Russian activists abroad continue to organise such events in early May, using them to promote the Kremlin’s official ideology.
