This is according to The Sun. A 31-year-old
Ukrainian man has been killed in a fatal attack in Cork, Ireland. According to The Sun, the man was stabbed near his home on Lower John Street on the evening of 17 March. After the attack, he managed to return to his flat, where he lost consciousness and died.
As the publication notes, the man left his flat on Camden Quay at around 7 pm that evening to buy food. According to preliminary reports, the attack took place at around 8 pm near the city centre.
His wife raised the alarm and called the police and paramedics. Despite attempts to assist him, the injured man could not be saved. A local doctor pronounced him dead shortly after the emergency services arrived.
The deceased’s body was taken to the mortuary at Cork University Hospital. A post-mortem has already been carried out by the state pathologist, Dr Sally Ann Collis, and the case has also been referred to the coroner. The Sun reports that the results of the post-mortem will determine the next steps in the investigation.
The Irish police have set up an operational headquarters at the Garda station on Watercourse Road and appointed a senior investigator to coordinate the case. Law enforcement officers have separately examined the location where the attack is believed to have taken place, as well as the family’s flat, which has been identified as a second crime scene. A full forensic examination has been carried out at both locations.
The victim’s wife and young child have been temporarily relocated to alternative accommodation. A liaison officer is working with the family, whilst investigators are simultaneously conducting door-to-door enquiries in the neighbourhood and collecting CCTV footage to identify the attackers and their route.
The Sun also reports that the Ukrainian family had been living in Ireland for some time. The police are urging anyone who may have witnessed the attack or has any information about the incident to contact their nearest Garda station.
