From Antarctica to the cover: meteorologist Ganchuk became the heroine of Harper's Bazaar
This was reported by Harper's Bazaar Ukraine.
31-year-old Ukrainian meteorologist Anzhelika Hanchuk appeared on the digital cover of Harper's Bazaar Ukraine. She became the heroine of the new issue of the publication after leading the Ukrainian Antarctic expedition.
The team chose the Kyiv Sea for the photo shoot to convey the atmosphere of Antarctica.
In an interview with the publication, Hanchuk admitted that she was surprised that the news of her appointment caused such a stir.
"Everyone said it was a great achievement. But I thought: is this really such progress? Is everything really that bad? In essence, it's logical: as a qualified specialist, I was appointed to a leadership position. But, imposing a gender stereotype, I, a woman, was allowed to do what was commonplace for a man," she said.
According to the meteorologist, for a long time there was a perception that working in Antarctica required physical strength above all else.
"But we live in the modern world. Today, technology performs the role of brute force. A crane can lift much more than all the male polar explorers who come on an expedition combined," Hanchuk noted.
At the same time, she added that she personally had not encountered gender discrimination.
"I can't say that Ukrainian female scientists experience total gender discrimination. But in the past, when it came to leadership positions, only men were chosen. The ironclad argument was that women in science couldn't be relied on because sooner or later they would go on maternity leave. I have never heard such comments directed at me," she said. Anzhelika
Hanchuk first visited Antarctica in 2021 as part of the 27th Ukrainian Antarctic expedition. She is currently leading the 31st Ukrainian Antarctic expedition.
