Vyshyvanka Day 2026: when it will be celebrated and what’s on the programme
World Vyshyvanka Day will be celebrated on 21 May 2026.
This year, the holiday has special significance – it marks its 20th anniversary.
Vyshyvanka Day falls on the third Thursday of May every year. The organisers explain that the date was chosen specifically as a working day to remind people that the embroidered shirt was part of everyday life for Ukrainians, not just festive attire.
The holiday was launched in 2006 at the Faculty of History, Political Science and International Relations of Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University.
The idea was proposed by a student at the time, Lesya Voronyuk. She approached her friends with a suggestion to choose a day when everyone would wear embroidered shirts together.
Initially, several dozen students and lecturers joined the campaign. The following year, other faculties of the university supported the initiative.
Subsequently, Vyshyvanka Day spread throughout Ukraine, and in 2010, thanks to the Ukrainian diaspora, it gained the status of a global event.
In 2015, the festival’s organising committee established the non-profit organisation “World Vyshyvanka Day”.
What’s special about 2026
In 2026, the main theme of Vyshyvanka Day was the cultural heritage of the occupied regions of Ukraine.
This refers to Donetsk, Luhansk, Crimea, Kherson, Zaporizhzhia and Kharkiv regions.
The organisers emphasise that Vyshyvanka Day has not only symbolic but also educational significance. It unites Ukrainians in Ukraine and abroad, supports cultural heritage and serves as an element of cultural diplomacy.
Over 100 countries take part in the celebration every year.
How to take part in Vyshyvanka Day
The organisers suggest wearing a vyshyvanka on 21 May, taking a photo, thanking those who support the tradition, honouring the memory of fallen defenders, and donating to the Ukrainian Defence Forces.
“After all, wearing a vyshyvanka means taking responsibility for Ukraine’s future,” the organisers of the event reminded us.
In 2026, a new tradition will also be launched – the “Embroidered Ribbon of Remembrance”.
It is dedicated to the fallen defenders of Ukraine.
Flashmob to mark the 20th anniversary of the festival
To mark the anniversary of Vyshyvanka Day, a flash mob is being launched: “The world in a vyshyvanka. Ukraine in the heart. 20”.
The idea was conceived by volunteer and social activist Maya Fisyuk.
The idea behind the flash mob is for participants in different countries around the world to wear embroidered shirts and form a “living” number 20.
Inside the number “0”, participants are invited to place two flags – the national flag of Ukraine and the flag of their country of residence.
Participants are then encouraged to take a photo or video, share it on social media, tag the World Vyshyvanka Day page and use the hashtag #WorldVyshyvankaDay20.
What events are planned
An official programme of events for Vyshyvanka Day in 2026 is planned in Ukraine and abroad.
Separate events are to take place in Chernivtsi and Kyiv.
A presentation of the project “Embroidered Conversations of Generations” is scheduled for 17 May in Budapest.
The main event will be the presentation of 12 embroidered ancient Ukrainian shirts, created based on the study of authentic originals.
Guests will also be able to view an exhibition of ancient costumes from the private collection of Khrystyna Blahodir, a collector and expert on traditional Ukrainian clothing.
The programme also includes the opportunity to create your own garment using the vybika technique, decorate an item with ornamentation, and watch the art-documentary film “The Nation’s Heritage”.
An exhibition entitled “Ukrainian Embroidered Heritage” is scheduled to take place in Turin from 21 to 24 May.
It will showcase authentic handmade shirts, rare exhibits over 100 years old, as well as works by masters, collectors and researchers who preserve and revive the tradition.
The programme also includes a screening of the documentary “The Nation’s Heritage” and the charity project “A Shirt for a Defender”.
On 23 May, the Ukrainian-Lithuanian Vyshyvanka Choir 2026 is set to perform in Vilnius to mark Vyshyvanka Day.
The event is expected to bring together hundreds of participants as a symbol of support for Ukraine and friendship between the Ukrainian and Lithuanian peoples.
As reported by ThePublic, Family Day in Ukraine in 2026 will be celebrated on 15 May, a Friday. This holiday coincides with International Family Day, which was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1993.
