What is the holiday on 29 May 2026: taboos, superstitions and name days
In folk tradition, this day was known as Theodosius the Ear of Corn
On 29 May 2026, Ukraine celebrates the feast day of the holy martyr Theodosia of Tyre according to the new church calendar. In folk tradition, this day was known as Theodosia Kolosyanitsa, and the main taboos were associated with the land, quarrels and major financial matters.

On 29 May according to the New Julian calendar, Orthodox Christians commemorate Saint Theodosia of Tyre, the martyr.

According to church tradition, she suffered for her Christian faith in the early 4th century.

On this day, believers pray for the health of their families, the strengthening of their faith, healing from illness, and peace in Ukraine. They also ask Saint Theodosia for a good harvest and protection for their homes.

In folk tradition, the date was known as Theodosia the Ear-Springer, as it was during this period that rye usually began to ear.

What not to do on this day

According to folk beliefs, on 29 May it was not advisable to dig the ground, drive stakes into it, jump on the ground or begin large-scale earthworks without absolute necessity.

The earth was considered to be ‘celebrating its name day’ on this day, so people tried to leave it in peace.

It was also advised not to embark on major financial ventures, borrow money or take out loans, as this could lead to losses.

One should not quarrel with loved ones, use foul language, wish ill on anyone, or hold onto old grudges. People believed that a conflict on this day could drag on for a long time.

Another taboo concerned sadness: people were advised not to cry, dwell on past failures or deliberately indulge in negative thoughts.

What you can do on 29 May

It was advised to spend this day peacefully – in prayer, good deeds and caring for loved ones.

Believers attended church services, lit candles for the health of their family, gave alms and helped those in need.

It was permitted to do light housework, cleaning, laundry, minor repairs, cooking and looking after pets.

The day was also considered favourable for walks, spending time with children, handicrafts, reading and planning future activities without making any drastic financial decisions.

International Days on 29 May

29 May also marks the UN International Day of Peacekeepers.

This date is dedicated to the memory of those who lost their lives during peacekeeping missions, as well as to all those working for peace in conflict zones.

In addition, this day marks World Digestive Health Day. It was established to draw attention to the prevention of gastrointestinal diseases and the importance of a healthy diet.

Folk traditions on 29 May

In the past, people used to observe nature closely on this day.

If the rye is in ear on Theodosius’s Day, there will be plenty of mushrooms in the forest.

The loud song of the nightingale heralded a rapid warming and dry weather.

The behaviour of birds, the condition of crops and the weather helped our ancestors to predict the summer and the coming harvest.
