On 29 May according to the New Julian calendar, Orthodox Christians commemorate Saint Theodosia of Tyre, the martyr.
According to church tradition, she suffered for her Christian faith in the early 4th century.
On this day, believers pray for the health of their families, the strengthening of their faith, healing from illness, and peace in Ukraine. They also ask Saint Theodosia for a good harvest and protection for their homes.
In folk tradition, the date was known as Theodosia the Ear-Springer, as it was during this period that rye usually began to ear.
What not to do on this day
According to folk beliefs, on 29 May it was not advisable to dig the ground, drive stakes into it, jump on the ground or begin large-scale earthworks without absolute necessity.
The earth was considered to be ‘celebrating its name day’ on this day, so people tried to leave it in peace.
It was also advised not to embark on major financial ventures, borrow money or take out loans, as this could lead to losses.
One should not quarrel with loved ones, use foul language, wish ill on anyone, or hold onto old grudges. People believed that a conflict on this day could drag on for a long time.
Another taboo concerned sadness: people were advised not to cry, dwell on past failures or deliberately indulge in negative thoughts.
What you can do on 29 May
It was advised to spend this day peacefully – in prayer, good deeds and caring for loved ones.
Believers attended church services, lit candles for the health of their family, gave alms and helped those in need.
It was permitted to do light housework, cleaning, laundry, minor repairs, cooking and looking after pets.
The day was also considered favourable for walks, spending time with children, handicrafts, reading and planning future activities without making any drastic financial decisions.
