Yuriy Butusov stated that Russian drones have become one of the main threats to Ukrainian troops on the front line, yet insufficient systematic attention is being paid to defences against them.

This was stated by journalist and military officer Yuriy Butusov in an interview with Radio NV.

Yuriy Butusov stated that on the front line, it is necessary not only to increase the Russian army’s losses but also to systematically reduce the losses of Ukrainian troops caused by enemy UAVs.

According to him, Ukrainian drone units are inflicting significant losses on Russian troops. At the same time, Russian UAVs have also become one of the main means of attack on the battlefield.

Butusov emphasised that it is currently the infantry that is holding the front line, but qualitative changes in the organisation of troop deployment are taking place slowly and with great difficulty.

Drones as the main threat

According to Butusov, the media often claim that Ukraine needs to eliminate 30, 40 or 50 thousand Russian soldiers per month.

At the same time, he believes that achieving such a goal is only possible if Ukraine reduces its own losses from drones.

Butusov stated that, in his opinion, this is precisely what is hardly ever discussed at the highest levels.

He also noted that Russian drones have become one of the main means of breaching Ukrainian battle lines.

Problems with the use of infantry

Separately, Butusov drew attention to mistakes made in the deployment of infantry in the ‘grey zone’.

According to him, a large number of such mistakes are repeated time and again.

He believes that without systematic protection for troops against UAVs, the problem of casualties will remain one of the key issues for the front line.

Butusov emphasised that the issue of protecting infantry from drones must be a priority, as not only defence but also the ability of Ukrainian forces to destroy the enemy more effectively depends on it.
