The President of Ukraine called for tougher measures against ships transporting Russian oil in circumvention of sanctions.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy responded to the detention by Belgian military forces of an oil tanker, which, according to him, belongs to Russia's so-called shadow fleet. He announced his position on social media.

The head of state called Belgium's actions decisive, noting that the ship was stopped last night. According to him, this tanker had been under sanctions by the United States, the European Union and the United Kingdom for a long time, but continued to transport Russian oil using a false flag and forged documents.

"We welcome these decisive actions against Moscow's 'floating wallet' and thank France for supporting the operation," Zelensky wrote.

He also stressed the need to improve European legislation so that ships carrying Russian oil in circumvention of restrictions are not only detained but also confiscated. According to him, the seized oil should be used to strengthen Europe's security.

"We must be decisive. The Russian Federation is acting like a mafia organisation, and the response must match this reality. If they reject the rules for the sake of war, the rules must provide for a clear and firm response," the president said.
