Zelensky criticised the Kyiv City Council's preparations amid problems with heating and lighting
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has placed part of the responsibility for the difficult situation with heat and electricity supply in Kyiv on the city authorities. He made this statement in an evening video address on Wednesday, 28 January, against the backdrop of the consequences of Russian strikes on the capital's energy infrastructure.
The head of state stressed that the necessary equipment should have been purchased and prepared before the start of winter. According to him, the city administration must now act much faster to ease the living conditions for Kyiv residents in February.
As of the evening of 28 January, 639 high-rise buildings in Kyiv remained without heat, according to Mayor Vitali Klitschko. According to him, more than 1,000 utility workers are working to eliminate the consequences of the attacks. Teams from Lviv, Poltava, Chernihiv, Vinnytsia, Zhytomyr, Mykolaiv, Odesa, Rivne, Kropyvnytskyi and other cities, as well as employees of Ukrzaliznytsia, are also involved in the work.
The situation with electricity supply remains problematic. According to Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal, after massive shelling, about 610,000 consumers in the capital remain without electricity. He noted that Kyiv's power system is in a difficult state due to uneven damage to the network infrastructure.
