Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that, against the backdrop of the war with Iran, the US is paying less attention to Ukraine. At the same time, he highlighted Germany’s role as a key partner.

In an interview with ZDF, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that the United States is increasingly less focused on Ukraine due to the conflict with Iran. According to him, US negotiators Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff are in constant contact with Iran and have no time for Ukraine.

At the same time, Zelenskyy spoke positively of Germany’s role. He described it as Ukraine’s greatest strategic partner in Europe and added that it is currently helping Ukraine more than the US. On the same day, he met with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz during Ukrainian-German government consultations in Berlin.

The President emphasised that the war with Iran has negative consequences for Ukraine. According to him, if the conflict drags on, arms supplies will decrease. He specifically drew attention to the shortage of Patriot systems, noting that the situation regarding them is complex.

“This is a challenge for everyone. A war for the whole world. Not just for the US and Israel,” said Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

He also stated Ukraine’s readiness to assist in the situation regarding the Strait of Hormuz, noting that Kyiv has experience of operating under conditions where sea routes are blocked. At the same time, he clarified that the US had not made such a request.

Commenting on the negotiations between the US, Russia and Europe, Zelenskyy noted that he sees no signals from Washington regarding the involvement of European countries in a trilateral format. According to him, US diplomacy with Russia appears more constructive than with Europe.

The President also spoke about Donald Trump’s position, noting that Trump had sought to remain neutral on the issue of Ukraine from the very beginning.

“I have a feeling that he said from the very beginning that he would remain in the middle. This means that he is neither on my side nor on Russia’s side,” said Zelenskyy.

He emphasised the importance of US pressure on Russia and added that, in his view, Donald Trump is the only person Vladimir Putin fears.

“If the US does not put pressure on Russia, they will stop being afraid,” he noted.

Separately, Zelenskyy confirmed that Ukraine is seeking to join the European Union, emphasising the importance of this process. At the same time, he noted that the prospects of NATO membership are less likely, particularly due to the US position.

When asked about the possibility of remaining president after the war ends, Zelenskyy replied that he did not have a clear answer. He noted that this role had affected his personal life and required discussion with his family.

The president also commented on the issue of Ukrainian men staying abroad. He stated that he cannot prevent people from leaving the country voluntarily, but would like them to return. At the same time, he acknowledged that this places a strain on Germany’s budget.
