A Norwegian humanitarian organisation is suspending its demining operations in Ukraine following the deaths of its staff in the Kherson region
This was reported on the organisation’s website.
As a result of the Russian shelling of the village of Novopetrivka, two NPA mission staff were killed and four others were injured. One of them is in a serious condition. Both the deceased and the injured are Ukrainian citizens.
The organisation, citing the Kherson Regional Military Administration, states that Russian troops struck with an ‘Iskander’ missile.
The NPA has been carrying out demining operations in Ukraine since 2022 and is one of the ten largest humanitarian organisations in the country. The organisation has now suspended its operations for safety reasons.
“This attack shows just how dangerous it is to be a humanitarian worker during a war. Unfortunately, this is part of a worrying trend: humanitarian organisations such as ours, which are protected by international law, are increasingly being targeted. Ultimately, this affects the civilian population, which depends on our aid,” said the organisation’s Secretary-General, Raymond Johansen.
It is worth recalling that in mid-June, the Ukrainian Navy received the mine-hunting vessel ‘Henichesk’ from the Netherlands.
