Iran has launched strikes against Bahrain and Kuwait
This is according to the Associated Press.
Trump has threatened Iran with further strikes
Following a new series of US strikes on military infrastructure, Iran launched missile and drone strikes on Bahrain and Kuwait. Against this backdrop, US President Donald Trump stated that the US military had “once again struck Iranian missile and drone storage sites, as well as coastal radar installations, in response to Iran’s violation of the ceasefire agreement”.
The US President also warned that, in the event of further escalation, the US could resort to a larger-scale military operation.
“If that happens, the Islamic Republic of Iran will cease to exist!” Donald Trump wrote on the social media platform Truth Social.
Attacks on Bahrain and Kuwait
According to the Kuwaiti authorities, air defence systems intercepted two ballistic missiles and several drones heading towards the country. No damage or casualties have been reported.
In Bahrain, a residential building near the international airport was damaged as a result of the Iranian strike. According to the local Ministry of the Interior, there were no fatalities. The country’s authorities described the attack as a “dangerous escalation” and accused Tehran of systematic aggression.
Tensions around the Strait of Hormuz
This new escalation comes against the backdrop of a dispute over the safety of shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. A multinational naval mission led by the US Navy has announced the expansion of a route for civilian vessels off the coast of Oman.
Iran has opposed this decision, stating that it alone should control shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned that any attempts to change the current order would only exacerbate tensions in the region.
Negotiations are under threat
The US and Iran are continuing negotiations on a temporary peace agreement, which provides for safe shipping, the easing of sanctions and the resolution of the issue of Iran’s nuclear programme. At the same time, the latest exchange of strikes has cast doubt on the prospects of reaching an agreement.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps stated that the new attacks were a response to US actions and threatened to halt the negotiation process entirely if Washington continued its military strikes.
