The heatwave in France has claimed around a thousand lives: the majority of the victims were elderly people
This is reported by Le Monde, citing AFP.
The elderly have been hardest hit
According to the agency, around 85 per cent of excess deaths are among people aged 65 and over. The situation is most severe in regions where the highest – red – danger level has been declared due to the extreme heat.
French medical professionals are particularly concerned about the rise in the number of deaths at home. This has been most noticeable in the Île-de-France region, which includes Paris and its suburbs.
The Ministry of Health emphasised that these figures are preliminary and may be incomplete. At the same time, they noted that the situation once again highlights the need to pay greater attention to people who are socially isolated, particularly elderly residents of large cities.
The heatwave has begun to subside
On Sunday, the heatwave in France began to ease after several days of abnormally high temperatures. In many regions of the country, temperatures exceeded +40°C.
French health authorities are continuing to analyse the impact of the heatwave. Final figures on the number of deaths and the effect of the extremely high temperatures on mortality rates will be published once the statistics have been compiled.
