A UN project on demining and support for farmers is launching in the Kherson region
This is reported by the KYIV POST
Farmers in four communities will receive support
The project will be implemented in 2026–2027 with the support of the Ukrainian Communities Recovery Fund (UCRF). Support is planned for 110 small farms in the Borozenske, Kalynivske, Velykooleksandrivske and Vysokopilsk communities in the Kherson region. According to the organisers, over 34,000 hectares of arable land in these communities remain unusable due to mine contamination and the consequences of hostilities. In the Kherson region, the agricultural sector has suffered some of the greatest losses in Ukraine. Production volumes in the region have fallen by more than 98% compared to the pre-war period.
The project involves demining and financial support
As part of the initiative, the FAO will conduct a geospatial analysis of the territories to identify priority areas requiring survey and demining. Selected programme participants will be able to receive financial assistance to purchase drought-resistant seeds, drip irrigation systems and other equipment for farm restoration. UNOPS, together with the Kherson Regional Municipal Emergency and Rescue Service, will be responsible for non-technical land surveys and the training of mine action specialists. A separate mine safety awareness campaign is planned, which will reach around 40,000 residents of the region.
Applications to participate in the programme can be submitted via the State Agrarian Register until 1 June 2026.
