The attacker opened fire near a security checkpoint
The incident took place on the evening of 23 May near one of the checkpoints close to the White House complex. According to preliminary reports, the man approached the security post and began shooting at Secret Service agents. The agents returned fire and wounded the attacker. He later died in hospital. According to CNN, the suspect was 21-year-old Nasir Best. Journalists note that he had previously come to the attention of law enforcement due to incidents near the White House. A passer-by was also injured during the shooting. He was hospitalised in a critical condition.
Trump was at the White House at the time of the incident
The Secret Service stated that US President Donald Trump was inside the residence at the time of the shooting and was unharmed. Following the sound of gunfire, the White House grounds were temporarily cordoned off. Journalists and press service staff were evacuated to secure premises, whilst Secret Service agents sealed off part of the complex. According to eyewitnesses, dozens of shots were fired near the White House. Law enforcement agencies are currently investigating the circumstances of the incident and the attacker’s motives.
