Drones attacked oil refineries in Russia's Samara region, dozens of explosions occurred
On the night of Friday, 2 January, drones attacked several regions of Russia. In the Samara region, according to eyewitnesses and monitoring channels, two oil refineries, the Novokuibyshevsky and Kuibyshev refineries, could have been hit. This was reported by The Public with reference to DW.
Local residents report that more than 10 powerful explosions were heard around 1:30 am. Eyewitnesses also reported bright flashes in the sky and a fire in one of the districts of Novokuibyshevsk.
According to Ukrainian and Russian monitoring resources, the attack could have been aimed at oil refining facilities. There is no official confirmation from the Russian authorities on the consequences of the strikes.
The Novokuibyshevsk oil refinery has been the target of drone attacks on several occasions, including in October and November 2024. In early 2026, Ukraine stepped up long-range strikes on Russian fuel and energy infrastructure, while Russian troops continue to launch drone attacks on Ukrainian cities.
