George Maloney sharply rejects the idea of a US military takeover of Greenland
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Maloni has publicly opposed any attempts by the United States to establish control over Greenland, including through the use of military force. It is reported by Bloomberg with reference to Meloni's statements during her annual press conference in Rome.
According to the head of the Italian government, Rome would not support US military action against the semi-autonomous territory of Denmark. She emphasised that such a scenario «would not be good for anyone, including the United States itself».
Maloney's statement came amid anxiety in European capitals over US President Donald Trump's rhetoric about the possible acquisition or forceful control of Greenland. The leaders of France and Denmark have already spoken out critically about these statements, warning of the risks to NATO.
At the same time, the Italian prime minister proposed an alternative to the forceful approach - strengthening NATO's presence in the Arctic. In her opinion, a «serious and meaningful presence of allies» in the region could alleviate US concerns about the influence of third countries and at the same time not destroy transatlantic unity.
