Eurovision stars Joost Klein and Tommy Cash have recorded a track about Russia

As of 28 July, ‘Russian Passport’ had not appeared on Joost Klein and Tommy Cash’s official pages or on the main streaming platforms. The song’s lyrics have been published on the Genius website, whilst audio recordings are circulating on TikTok and unofficial YouTube channels.
The artists themselves have not yet confirmed their authorship of the track, its release date or the production of an official music video. However, Joost Klein and Tommy Cash have collaborated before: in 2025, they released the track ‘United By Music’, in which they criticised the European Broadcasting Union.
What Joost Klein and Tommy Cash are singing about
‘Russian Passport’ begins with a description of Russia, which the authors include borscht in. In July 2022, UNESCO added the tradition of preparing Ukrainian borscht to the list of intangible cultural heritage in need of urgent safeguarding.
The track goes on to mention the KGB, a possible poisoning, Red Square and obtaining a Russian passport. Some of the lyrics are in Russian; in particular, listeners are told about Joost Klein’s alleged granting of Russian citizenship.
The song also contains profanity. Judging by the content of certain lines, the song may be satire or a deliberate provocation; however, the performers have not yet explained its intent. Therefore, it is not possible to claim that the track constitutes direct support for Russia until the artists have issued an official statement.
Why Joost Klein was disqualified from Eurovision
Joost Klein represented the Netherlands at Eurovision 2024 with the song ‘Europapa’ and made it through to the final. However, ahead of the final show, the European Broadcasting Union disqualified him following an incident involving a member of the film crew.
The case was investigated by the Swedish public prosecutor’s office. The investigation established that the artist made a movement that brushed against the woman’s camera, although witnesses gave differing accounts of the incident. In August 2024, the public prosecutor’s office closed the case as it was unable to prove any intention to intimidate the crew member or cause her serious fear.
Following the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, Joost Klein was also criticised for his collaboration with the Russian rapper CMH. Their song ‘Jackass’ was released in March 2022, but the Dutch artist’s team stated that the track had been recorded before the invasion.
What is Tommy Cash known for?
Tommy Cash represented Estonia at Eurovision 2025 with the song ‘Espresso Macchiato’. He came third, scoring 356 points in the final.
Prior to taking part in the contest, the artist had collaborated with Russian performers, notably the band Little Big, appeared in Russian projects and performed in Moscow and St Petersburg.
Following the Russian invasion, Tommy Cash cancelled concerts in Kyiv, Moscow and St Petersburg. In his statement, he described himself as an opponent of military aggression and expressed his support for the Ukrainian people, but did not offer a direct political assessment of the Kremlin’s actions. As a result, the artist’s stance drew criticism from the Ukrainian public.
